Stuck in the Middle
I have a younger brother who is three years younger than me. Since I’m in high school and he is in sixth grade, many times over the summer he has asked me what middle school was like and what he needs to do to get through the next three years of his life. I’ve given some advice (for instance: do not use the bathrooms there) and when the time came, he had his first experiences with middle school. In this interview, I’ve asked him about his experience in middle school and what he likes and doesn’t like about them. Questions and Answers will be slightly edited to match the flow of the interview.

Q: What is the most exciting thing you’ve done so far in middle school?
A: In some of my classes, I’ve done some projects that are pretty exciting but other than that, there's not really anything that exciting.

Q: How is middle school different from elementary school
A: Very different! The classes are a lot harder, it's more stressful, way more homework, and there’s recess, which I really miss. And the lunch is shorter.
Q: What do you miss most from elementary school?
A: Recess definitely. It really allows me to let out my energy before the end of the day.
Q: What is one thing that you wish you could change about middle school?
A: I’d rather have our lunch blocks be longer…sometimes I don’t even get to finish eating. I also would rather us not switch schedules. In middle school, you switch your blocks weekly. One week, the schedule will be A, B, C, D, E. The next it will be E, D, C, B, A. I rather us not do that and to just stick with one schedule.
Q: What is one thing you look forward to in your middle school years?
A: I look forward to seeing my friends and getting to pick classes that I want.
Q: What is your favorite class right now?
A: I would say it’s history because the history teacher is pretty fun and it’s kinda interesting learning about it; and I have some of my friends there.
Q: Overall, do you enjoy middle school?
A: I don’t enjoy it, but overall…I would say it’s ok. I don’t hate it, but I don’t like it.
Q: Are you ready for high school?
A: Not even a little.
