First Sight

It was a cool, crisp autumn morning.  TJ was walking to his grandma’s house, as he was visiting her for the weekend.  He had just bought his hot, morning coffee from the nearest coffee shop.  He took nice, deep breaths in the cool air and was delighted by the smell of pumpkin spice from a nearby convenience store.  Small, brown leaves fell from the trees above him as he walked by.  Over to his right, he saw the Gateway Arch and the skyline that was in front of it.  This was much better than the view he had outside his college dorm back in LA.  As he took his first sip of the coffee, something bumped into him, causing it to spill all over his new white puffer jacket.  Startled, he looked down at his jacket, but his vision came across different notebooks scattered on the pavement.  Standing next to him was a girl in a suit, trying to pick up her scattered papers and notes.  As reluctant as he was feeling, he knelt down.

“Here, let me help you,” TJ said, collecting the scattered sheets of paper.

“I am so sorry about this,” the girl replied.

“No worries,” TJ said nicely.  “I’m happy to help,” but really he was annoyed.  This stain will never come out, he thought looking down at a brown circular stain on his jacket.  He stood up with the books and handed them to the girl, but he was slowly stopped by her gorgeous face smiling back at him.  He couldn’t believe his eyes.

“I can buy you another coffee if you’d like, and possibly a new jacket,” the girl joked.  TJ's thoughts cluttered his mind as he couldn’t find the right words to say, so he nodded.

“Cool!” the girl replied.  She slowly stuck out her hand.  She said happily, “I’m Makayla.”
